How to Optimize Your Images

Did you know that over 20% of U.S. web searches happen on Google Images?

That’s more than Facebook, YouTube and Amazon combined. 😲

So, should you incorporate image optimization into your SEO strategy?

Heck yes.

Here’s how to optimize your images.

  • Pick the right image: Seems obvious, right? You’d be surprised though. When picking images, go with original content if you can. Stay away from stock imagery. If you need a staff photo, get an actual staff photo of your team.
  • Nail the file name: The goal is to let Google know what your image is without looking at it. If your image is of the Grand Canyon sunset, don’t go with DSC6879.jpg, go with grand-canyon-sunset.jpg.
  • Format it: Don’t let all the image formats confuse you. If you have larger photos or illustrations, use .JPG. For transparent images, use .PNG. If you need to retain some quality, but need a smaller file, use WebP. Have some icons or logos? Use .SVG.
  • Add alt text: Alt text displays when the image doesn’t. Make sure to include alt text on all of your web imagery. It should consist of your SEO keyphrase in order for search engines to read it.
