Tuesday: If you’re in the short-form game, you know that most viewers drop off around the 3-second mark. It’s frustrating to invest in high-quality content that users are bound to engage with and enjoy—if you could only stop the scroll. Here’s how to write a good hook, from Marketing Examined.

Wednesday: Brands struggle to establish and maintain E-E-A-T, which requires personal motivation from the author and ongoing dedication to a topic as a subject matter expert. And often, authors leave a brand for other opportunities, taking their E-E-A-T with them. Read more about the true role of brands in author E-E-A-T from Search Engine Land.

Thursday: Google rolled out AI Overviews (AIO) to U.S. search results on May 14. While Google claims that links shared in AIOs receive higher CTR than the 10 blue links of a traditional SERP, this could be due to fewer clickable targets in the AIO interface. Google has been otherwise vague and evasive about CTR data. Here’s how to measure the impact of AIO on your site traffic.

The Conversation

A week of sunsets and glitches, it seems…

Christopher asked, “Google to sunset Business Profile chat in July. A relief or a pain?”

Marlana asked, “FB’s Chat Plugin sunset-ed ?! 😢 What are you using instead as a chat plugin on your website?”

Heidi asked, “What the hell is going on with Canva? Anyone else having issues. Even typing text is delayed.”

Ryan asked, “Is anyone having issues with Looker Studio and system error messages and issues with filtering?”

Pocket Stats

Here’s what we learned about The Daily Carnage community this week:

  • June is Pride Month, and while 48% of marketers have Pride-related content and campaigns planned, 45% report that their brands don’t participate in the conversation. Meanwhile, 7% of marketers who usually do participate will be sitting this year out.
  • 29% of marketers say their brand’s E-E-A-T strategy is investing in the development of a few key writers on the team, while 28% look to hire and collaborate with already established SMEs. 27% leverage both the former and latter strategies, while 16% don’t have a formal strategy at all.
  • In the two weeks since Google’s AIO rollout, only 35% of marketers have begun tracking its impact on their website traffic.

Answer: eBay.

Iranian-American programmer Pierre Omidyar created what would become eBay, and the site’s first alleged sale was his own broken laser pointer for $14.83. Take a look at eBay’s old homepage for some Web 1.0 nostalgia.
