Tactics

The Corporate-Speak Detector

You know that sentence that sounds perfectly professional until you read it out loud? Suddenly, nobody in the history of human conversation has ever spoken that way.

Between corporate jargon, recycled brand messaging, and AI-generated drafts, it’s easy for marketing communications to lose their personality. PR Daily gathered advice from communications professionals on making writing clearer, more relevant, and worth reading.

Here are five ways to give your copy a reality check:

  • Borrow your audience’s vocabulary. Pay attention to how customers and employees describe their needs. Their actual words are often more useful than a brand voice document full of adjectives.
  • Put every story through three questions. What does your audience care about? What does your organization uniquely know? And which business goal does the story support?
  • Show leadership the finished idea. Instead of pitching an abstract content strategy, demonstrate what the final piece could look like and connect it to meaningful outcomes.
  • Let humans do the final editing. AI can help explore angles and develop drafts, but interviews, audience feedback, and thoughtful revisions make the messaging more distinctive.
  • Read it out loud. Imagine someone saying your copy in a video. If a phrase sounds stiff, overly polished, or unnatural, rewrite it until it sounds like something a person would actually say.

A useful editorial style guide can help maintain consistency, but it shouldn’t make every piece of content sound identical.

Good brand writing doesn’t need to be clever in every sentence. It needs to sound recognizable, communicate something worthwhile, and make sense to the people reading it.

Love Is Eternal

In Mexico, there’s a beautiful belief that hummingbirds carry the spirits of loved ones returning for a visit.

Cerveza Victoria brings that tradition to life for DĆa de Muertos with ā€œEl Amor Es Eterno,ā€ a touching short film following Carmen, who returns as a hummingbird to visit her husband as he opens the taqueria they once dreamed of building together.

Blending live action with handcrafted stop-motion, the film features a wooden hummingbird, more than 4,000 handmade flowers, and Juan Gabriel’s iconic ā€œAmor Eterno.ā€

Fair warning: this one might make you cry.
