What is Microcopy?
Microcopy is the tiny pieces of text embedded throughout a digital product, like the words on buttons, form hints, error messages, confirmations, tooltips, you get it.
Microcopy guides people at precise moments of interaction. It should be short, aware of where users might hesitate, actionable, and authentic to the brandās voice.
Itās not flashy, but itās critical copy. Unclear labels can lead users to abandon forms or hesitate to click, but thoughtful wording reduces friction and builds trust.
Hereās a list of common microcopy elements youāll encounter in UX/UI design:
- Button and call-to-action (CTA) text: āSign up for freeā or āContinue to paymentā to set clear expectations.
- Form field labels and hints: guiding users what to enter, like āEnter email address.ā
- Error and validation messages: explaining what went wrong and how to fix it.
- Helper text and tooltips: short tips that clarify functions.
- Empty states or confirmation text: reassuring users after an action.
